Medicine and Marketing:
A Perfect Reason to S
ee a Doctor...

The sick and healthy business both need a doctor.

Marketing is a huge part of any business success. As Steve Schlagel has said, “Marketing plus anything means a lot of money.” But there's something more you NEED to know before you take your money to the bank...

Certain businesses succeed better at certain times. It's just a fact of life.

In an economic depression, companies flood the doors of financial advisers because they want to save their hard earned cash. Businesses like CPA's, CFP's and Business consultants usually do better in hard economic times while businesses like construction and the building trades usually rake in the cash during an economic boom.

What does this mean for your business?

You need to take time to consider your business and your goals. Any business can succeed, but would you rather make business easy or hard? If you choose the wrong business you may just find yourself working late hours and weekends to make ends meet.

You already have an established business. What can you do?

Congratulations on your business! Simply having a business is a big step. If this is one of those times you find yourself on easy street with business rolling in you should highly consider marketing. Marketing can help get you more customers, and make you more profitable.

Lets say you own a department store. What is the most profitable clothing to sell? The only way you can know this is with marketing. Marketing will track the results of each type of clothing you sell and find out what is most profitable. Sell more of whats profitable and you make more money. It's that simple. You may find you sell a lot of earrings on a display by the front counter. This sort of product is often referred to as a “back-end” product. People come in for clothes and end up buying earrings. Those earrings might actually bring you in a much higher profit margin than the huge sock inventory you've been maintaining. Why not devote a lot more to earrings and a lot less to socks? There are some calculations to make this decision responsibly, but you may just find you can make a lot more sales without necessarily having more clients or more overhead.

If this is one of those times where your business is struggling... you should be marketing. You need to find out how to make more money and stay in business. When business is good you have money rolling in and you may not think about marketing... but when business gets bad you may think you can live without marketing. Don't make that mistake.

A healthy person can benefit from a doctor because a doctor can help them eat better, be healthier, live longer, and have a higher quality of life. A sick person NEEDS a doctor to get better. Unfortunately doctors are not miracle works and even with the utmost care some people die.

In the same way both a successful business and a struggling business can benefit from marketing. But marketing professionals are not miracle workers and can't raise your business from the dead.

Should you still seek the advice of a doctor even though they can't guarantee good news all the time? Yes. And should your business seek a marketing professional? That goes without saying.
